Getting there and back
- By tram. The Arena/Olympic Legacy Park stop, on the Yellow Route towards Meadowhall and the Tram Train towards Rotherham, is about 11 minutes from the city centre and two minutes’ walk from the arena.
- By train. Sheffield station has trains from London St Pancras in about 2 hours, and from Manchester through the Hope Valley in under an hour at the fastest.
- On the day. The route closes fully to traffic and parked cars are moved off it, so the organisers ask spectators to walk or cycle to where they watch. You can usually walk or cycle on the closed roads until about 30 minutes before the publicity caravan, which comes through around two hours ahead of the riders.
- Watching in the Peak District. Winnats Pass, near Castleton, and Snake Pass, between Glossop and Ladybower, are the big climbs. They’re on narrow roads in open country, so plan how you’ll get there and back, and expect the roads to be closed for some time.
- By car. Don’t count on driving to the finish. Roads on the route close, and the organisers will publish travel and parking plans closer to the time.
Booking tips
- Book as soon as you can. The finish is on a summer Saturday, and the places near a tram stop go first.
- Stay near the tram. A place in the city centre gets you to the finish in minutes, without driving.
- Count beds, not bedrooms. Going as a group? Check how many separate beds there are, and who would be sharing.
- Spread the cost. When check-in is at least 15 days away, pay half when you book and the rest a week before you arrive, with no extra fees.
