Data centre building is one of the busiest kinds of construction work right now. Slough, West London and the Docklands already hold some of Europe’s biggest data centre clusters, and new campuses are going up from Waltham Cross to Newport. Five AI Growth Zones were named between January 2025 and January 2026: Culham in Oxfordshire, the North East around Blyth and Cobalt Park, North Wales on Anglesey and at Trawsfynydd, South Wales along the M4, and Lanarkshire. Big campuses such as QTS at Cambois, Elsham Tech Park and Equinix’s Hertfordshire Campus are planned to be built in phases over several years.
A campus is usually built in stages. Enabling works and piling come first, then the shell and core of each building. Mechanical and electrical fit-out follows, with power, cooling, cabling, fire protection and controls, and it is often the busiest stage on site. Commissioning tests every system before handover, and then the next data hall starts. Once a site is running, it still needs maintenance crews, upgrades and expansions, so the work around a campus rarely stops.
On site you’ll find groundworkers, steel erectors, electricians, mechanical fitters and pipefitters, cablers, controls and fire engineers, commissioning engineers and project teams. Many travel from job to job, working long shifts and rotations, and the headcount rises and falls as each phase peaks and ends. QTS, for example, expects about 1,200 construction jobs at Cambois.
Finding somewhere to stay is often the hard part. Campuses sit on business parks, by motorways or on old power station and airfield sites, where hotels are few, busy or a long drive away. Crews need beds for weeks or months, room to stay together, a kitchen to cook in after a long shift, and space for vans and tools, with the option to add homes when the fit-out peaks.
