Getting there and back
- By train. Manchester Piccadilly has trains from London Euston in a little over 2 hours, and from Leeds in under an hour at the fastest. From Piccadilly, trams run to St Peter’s Square, a few minutes’ walk from Deansgate.
- By tram. St Peter’s Square and Deansgate-Castlefield are the closest Metrolink stops. Trams may be busy or diverted on race days, so check before you set off.
- On the day. The route closes fully to traffic and parked cars are moved off it, so the organisers ask spectators to walk or cycle to where they watch. You can usually walk or cycle on the closed roads until about 30 minutes before the publicity caravan, which comes through around two hours ahead of the riders.
- To Sheffield. Trains from Manchester Piccadilly to Sheffield through the Hope Valley take under an hour at the fastest, if you want to see the end of Stage 2 too.
- By car. Don’t count on driving into the city centre on race days. Roads on the route close, and the organisers will publish travel and parking plans closer to the time.
Booking tips
- Stay on the Friday night. It puts you in town for the finish on Friday and the start on Saturday morning.
- Book as soon as you can. Two days of the race in one city means the places near Deansgate go first.
- Count beds, not bedrooms. Going as a group? Check how many separate beds there are, and who would be sharing.
- Spread the cost. When check-in is at least 15 days away, pay half when you book and the rest a week before you arrive, with no extra fees.
