Near the big road schemes

Working on highways projects

Major road schemes are a long game. Early works on the Lower Thames Crossing, a new road and tunnel under the Thames east of Gravesend, began in 2026; the A66 dualling between Penrith and Scotch Corner was approved to start main construction in November 2026; and the A428 Black Cat to Caxton Gibbet, the A57 Link Roads at Mottram and the A9 dualling in the Highlands are being built now. Others, like the A38 in Derby and the A46 at Newark, have consent and are waiting on contractors.

A scheme usually starts with surveys, vegetation clearance and utility diversions, then moves into earthworks, drainage, structures such as bridges and underpasses, and surfacing, with traffic management throughout. The big ones take years: the A66 is now planned over nine years, and the Lower Thames Crossing’s tunnelling isn’t expected until 2028. Once a road or bridge opens, maintenance teams keep it running, often under overnight closures.

Crews include groundworkers, plant operators, piling and steel-fixing gangs, bridge and concrete teams, surfacing crews, traffic management operatives, engineers and site managers. Many work long days in summer and nights when lanes are closed, and gangs move along the route as sections open.

Road schemes often run through countryside between towns, and the work moves along the route. Hotels in small towns fill quickly, and crews who stay for months need a kitchen, somewhere to wash and dry site gear, and space to switch off. A whole house a short drive from the compound keeps the gang together and makes the day simpler.

How Nezt helps

  • Hotels near the route are full or far away

Send one free request with the area, dates and headcount. Hosts with a home within 15 miles send offers, typically within 8 minutes.

  • The work moves along the route

Search by the town nearest the next section, or send a new request for each area. Requests are free and don’t need payment details.

  • Night closures and early starts

Book a whole home rather than hotel rooms, so the crew has its own kitchen and quiet space to sleep in the day. Many houses sleep 6 or more.

  • Gangs grow and shrink between phases

Book several homes close together, and send more requests as the crew grows.

  • Schemes that run for years

Stays of 60 nights or more can be paid monthly, many hosts offer weekly or monthly discounts, and companies get an invoice in the company’s name.

  • Vans, trailers and parking

Each listing shows its own parking and cancellation policy, and you can message the host through Nezt before you book.

Questions people ask

How do I book accommodation for a road crew?

Search by location and number of guests and book a listed home straight away, or send a free request with your dates, headcount and where the scheme is. Hosts with a home within 15 miles send offers, and for bigger crews you can book several homes close together.

Can the whole gang stay in one house?

Many homes on Nezt are whole houses that sleep 6 or more, with a kitchen and living space. Set the number of guests when you search to see homes with room for everyone, or book several homes nearby for a bigger crew.

Is there accommodation near the big road schemes?

Yes. There are homes in Gravesend, Grays and Tilbury for the Lower Thames Crossing, Penrith, Appleby and Darlington for the A66, Bedford, Sandy and Huntingdon for the A428 Black Cat scheme, Hyde and Stalybridge for the A57 Link Roads, Cheltenham and Gloucester for the A417 and M5 junction 10, and Inverness and Perth for the A9 dualling.

What if there’s nothing listed near a remote scheme?

Send a request anyway. Hosts with a home within 15 miles of the area you pick can send offers, even if nothing is listed there yet. For remote schemes like the A9, it can help to also try the nearest town, such as Inverness or Perth.

Can we add or drop homes as the gang changes?

Yes. You can send another request whenever the crew grows and book more homes close by. If you need fewer beds, each listing’s cancellation policy shows what changing a booking means, and you can message the host through Nezt.

Can we book for a scheme that runs for years?

Yes. Stays run from a single night to many months. Stays of 60 nights or more can be paid monthly, and many hosts offer weekly or monthly discounts.

Can you invoice our company?

Yes. Companies get an invoice in the company’s name, and a real team on the phone, WhatsApp and email can help arrange stays for your crews.

How quickly will we get offers?

Offers typically arrive within 8 minutes. A request is free, needs no payment details and stays open for 7 days, and each offer lasts 48 hours, so you can compare before you choose.

Is there parking for vans and pickups?

Each listing shows its parking, so you can check before you book. If you need space for several vans or a trailer, message the host through Nezt to ask.

What if the programme changes?

Each home has its own cancellation policy, shown before you book. You can message the host through Nezt at any time to ask about changing your dates.
