Furnished houses and apartments for the crews working on nuclear sites.
Homes with a bed for everyone, a kitchen and space to switch off after a shift.
From a few weeks on an outage to years on a new build, and many hosts offer weekly or monthly discounts.
Nuclear work spans new build, power stations still running, and clean-up. EDF is building Hinkley Point C in Somerset. Sizewell C in Suffolk got the final go-ahead in July 2025, and the government has chosen Wylfa on Anglesey for the first Rolls-Royce small modular reactors. Heysham 1 and 2, Hartlepool, Torness and Sizewell B still generate power. Nuclear Restoration Services is decommissioning more than a dozen former sites, and Sellafield in Cumbria faces decades of clean-up.
The work comes in phases. A new build runs for years: earthworks and marine works, then civils, then mechanical and electrical installation, then commissioning. A station that’s running shuts down reactors for planned outages, and inspection and maintenance crews arrive for a few weeks at a time. Decommissioning goes on for decades, in stages: defuelling, taking plant apart, demolition and waste work. Fuel and defence sites such as Springfields, Capenhurst, AWE, Barrow and Raynesway in Derby have long building programmes of their own.
On site you’ll find civil engineers, steel fixers, welders, pipefitters, electricians, scaffolders, insulators, crane operators and inspectors, along with radiation protection teams, engineers and project managers. Many work rotations, and outage crews often work round-the-clock shifts. Headcount climbs fast at the start of an outage or a new phase of a build, then falls again.
Finding somewhere to stay is hard because most nuclear sites are on quiet stretches of coast: Sellafield, Wylfa, Heysham, Torness, Dungeness and Hinkley Point. The towns nearby are small, and their hotels fill up when an outage or a big build is on. Sizewell C alone expects to support around 10,000 jobs at its peak. Crews need a bed each, a kitchen for long shifts, a quiet room to sleep after nights, and space for the vans.
