Near the big refineries and plants

Working on refinery shutdowns and turnarounds

Refineries, chemical plants, gas terminals and power stations run around the clock, so the big maintenance jobs wait for a planned shutdown, also called a turnaround or outage. Britain’s four remaining fuel refineries are Fawley, Stanlow, the Humber refinery at Killingholme and Pembroke. Grangemouth stopped refining crude in 2025 and is now a fuel import terminal beside the INEOS chemicals complex, and Phillips 66 bought the neighbouring Lindsey refinery in 2026 without restarting refining there. Around them sit chemical parks at Wilton, Saltend and Runcorn, gas terminals at Bacton, Easington and St Fergus, LNG terminals at Milford Haven and the Isle of Grain, and steelworks at Scunthorpe and Port Talbot.

A shutdown comes in stages. Weeks of preparation come first, with scaffolding going up and materials arriving. Then the units come offline and the main work starts: opening and inspecting vessels, replacing valves, exchangers and pipework, and cleaning. The shutdown itself often runs four to eight weeks before start-up, and the largest refinery turnarounds come round only every few years, so they are planned well ahead. Power stations have shorter planned outages. At Port Talbot, crews are building Tata Steel’s new electric arc furnace, due to be commissioned in late 2027 or early 2028, and the Fife Ethylene Plant at Mossmorran is being decommissioned through to early 2028.

Shutdown crews are big and mixed: scaffolders, pipefitters, welders, mechanical fitters, riggers, electrical and instrument technicians, inspectors, insulators, blasters and painters, plus supervisors and planners. Most arrive together, work 12-hour shifts on days or nights, often seven days a week, and leave when the plant is back online. Specialist teams come and go for a week or two in between.

That makes accommodation the hard part. When hundreds of extra contractors arrive in places like Pembroke Dock, Immingham or Ellesmere Port, nearby hotels fill quickly. Night shift workers need to sleep in the day, crews need somewhere to cook at odd hours, and vans need parking. A whole house close to the site, shared by four to eight people, often works better than a row of hotel rooms.

How Nezt helps

  • Hotels near the plant fill up when a shutdown starts

Book whole homes as soon as the dates are set, or send a free request with the site, dates and headcount. Hosts with a home within 15 miles send offers, typically within 8 minutes.

  • Day and night shifts in the same crew

In a whole home the crew has the place to itself, with its own kitchen for meals at any hour. Message the host through Nezt before booking to ask about blinds, beds or anything else.

  • The headcount changes as the work goes on

Book several homes close together and send more requests as the crew grows. Each listing shows its cancellation policy before you book, so you know where you stand when people leave.

  • The company needs proper paperwork

Get an invoice in the company’s name. Stays of 60 nights or more can be paid monthly.

  • Weeks of hotel bills add up

Homes on Nezt are on average 25% cheaper than Airbnb and other booking sites, many hosts offer weekly or monthly discounts, and a kitchen cuts the cost of eating out.

  • No time to ring round

A real team on the phone, WhatsApp and email helps arrange stays, so the shutdown planner can get on with the job.

Questions people ask

How do I book accommodation for a shutdown crew?

Search by location and number of guests and book a listed place straight away, or send a free request with your dates, headcount, budget and where the site is. Hosts with a home within 15 miles send you offers. For bigger crews, book several homes close together.

Can the whole crew stay in one house?

Many places on Nezt are whole houses that sleep 6 or more. Set the number of guests when you search to see places with room for everyone.

Is there accommodation near the main refineries and plants?

Yes. There are places in Southampton and Totton for Fawley, Ellesmere Port and Chester for Stanlow, Immingham, Grimsby and Hull for the Killingholme refineries and Saltend, Pembroke Dock and Haverfordwest for Pembroke, Redcar and Middlesbrough for Wilton, Falkirk and Stirling for Grangemouth, Scunthorpe for the steelworks, and Port Talbot and Swansea for Port Talbot.

Is a home better than a hotel for night shifts?

Many crews find it is. In a whole home the crew has the place to itself, with a kitchen for meals at any hour. If you need blackout blinds or anything else, message the host through Nezt before you book.

Can we add or release homes as the headcount changes?

Yes. Book another home or send another request as the crew grows. If people leave early, each listing’s own cancellation policy applies, and it’s shown before you book. You can message the host through Nezt to ask about changing dates.

How quickly will hosts send offers?

Offers typically arrive within 8 minutes. Requests are free, need no payment details and stay open for 7 days, and each offer lasts 48 hours, so you can compare before you choose.

Can we get an invoice in the company’s name?

Yes. Companies get an invoice in the company’s name, and stays of 60 nights or more can be paid monthly.

Is there parking for vans?

Each listing shows its parking, so you can check before you book. If you need space for several vans, message the host through Nezt to ask.

What if the shutdown overruns or finishes early?

Each place has its own cancellation policy, shown before you book. You can message the host through Nezt at any time to ask about changing your dates.

What if nothing is listed near our site?

Send a request anyway. It goes to hosts with a home within 15 miles of where you need to stay, and our team on the phone, WhatsApp and email can help arrange stays for your crew.
