Working on shipyard and naval base projects

Shipbuilding and naval support work is busy again. BAE Systems is building the Dreadnought-class submarines at Barrow, where construction of the first SSN-AUKUS boat is due to start in 2027, and Type 26 frigates on the Clyde at Govan and Scotstoun. Babcock is building Type 31 frigates at Rosyth. Navantia, which bought Harland & Wolff in 2025, cut the first steel for the Royal Fleet Auxiliary’s Fleet Solid Support ships at Appledore in December 2025, with Belfast as the main yard.

The work comes in phases. Steelwork and block building come first, then outfitting, when pipes, cables and systems go in, then testing, commissioning and sea trials. A frigate or submarine takes years from first steel to handover. Ships in service come back for planned docking periods, refits and repairs at Devonport, Portsmouth, Rosyth, Birkenhead and Falmouth, which can last from a few weeks to many months. The yards and bases are being rebuilt too, from new submarine docks at Devonport to the Clyde Infrastructure Programme at Faslane, and old submarines are being taken apart at Rosyth.

On site you’ll find welders, platers, pipefitters, electricians, fitters, riggers and painters, working alongside engineers, commissioning teams and specialist subcontractors. Crews often come in for one phase and move on, so numbers rise and fall as a ship moves from steelwork to outfitting to trials. Many work long days or shifts and travel home at weekends or on rotation.

Some yards are a long way from big cities, like Barrow at the end of the Furness peninsula or Faslane on the Gare Loch, and a long refit or build means weeks of hotel bills with the crew spread across rooms. What crews need is simple: a bed each, a kitchen to cook proper meals, space to unwind after a shift, parking and a short drive to the gate.

Questions people ask

How do I book accommodation for a shipyard crew?

Search by location and number of guests and book a listed home straight away, or send a free request with the yard, your dates, headcount and budget. Hosts with a home within 15 miles send offers, typically within 8 minutes. It’s free to send, there’s no obligation and you don’t need payment details.

Can the whole crew stay together?

Many homes on Nezt are whole houses that sleep 6 or more, with a kitchen and living space to share. Set the number of guests when you search to see homes with room for everyone, or book several homes close together for a bigger crew.

Can we add or release homes as the headcount changes?

You can add homes at any time: book another listed home or make a new request as the crew grows. Each home is booked separately, with its own dates and cancellation policy, so check the policy before you book and message the host through Nezt if a stay needs to end early.

Is there accommodation near the big shipyards and naval bases?

Yes. There are homes in Barrow-in-Furness and Ulverston for the submarine yard, Glasgow, Renfrew and Clydebank for the Type 26 yards at Govan and Scotstoun, Dunfermline and Edinburgh for Rosyth, Plymouth for Devonport, Portsmouth and Gosport for Portsmouth Naval Base, Alexandria for Faslane, Birkenhead for Cammell Laird and Falmouth for Falmouth Docks.

Can my company pay by invoice?

Yes. Companies get an invoice in the company’s name, and stays of 60 nights or more can be paid monthly.

What if nothing is listed near the yard?

Send a free request anyway. Hosts with a home within 15 miles of the area you choose can send offers, and the request stays open for 7 days. Our team can also help on the phone, WhatsApp or email.

Do the homes need security clearance for work at a naval base?

Homes on Nezt are private homes from local hosts, not on the base. Your company handles any clearance for the site, and you can message hosts through Nezt about anything else you need.

Is there parking for vans?

Each listing shows its parking, so you can check before you book. If you need space for several vans, message the host through Nezt to ask.

What if the refit overruns or finishes early?

Each home has its own cancellation policy, shown before you book. You can message the host through Nezt at any time to ask about changing your dates.
