Solar farms are getting much bigger. Cleve Hill in Kent, the largest operating solar farm in Britain, has been fully running since July 2025, and since then the government has granted consent for a run of even larger schemes, including Springwell (800MW) between Lincoln and Sleaford and One Earth (740MW) on the Nottinghamshire–Lincolnshire border. Many sit in the same few areas, so Lincolnshire, the Trent Valley and the Humber will have several solar farms being built at once over the next few years. Most now come with battery storage on site, and standalone batteries such as Thorpe Marsh near Doncaster are being built too.
A big solar farm is built in stages. First come site set-up, fencing, access tracks and compounds. Then piling crews drive the frames into the ground, installers fit the panels, and cable gangs trench and lay cables to the inverters and the on-site substation. Battery containers, the substation and the grid connection follow, then testing and commissioning. On the biggest schemes this runs for a year or more, often in phases, and once a farm is running it still needs inspections, inverter and electrical maintenance, and grounds work for decades.
On site you’ll find civils and groundworks gangs, piling rig operators, mounting and panel installation teams, electricians, HV cable jointers, substation and commissioning engineers, site managers and security. Installation crews are often the biggest group, and many travel from other parts of the country and work week-on, home at the weekend, so headcount rises sharply during panel installation and drops again for commissioning.
Most sites are on farmland, miles from the nearest hotel, and the local B&Bs fill fast when several projects build at the same time. Crews need homes they can stay in for weeks or months, with a bed each, a kitchen to cook after a long day outside, somewhere to dry kit and, ideally, room for the vans. Whole homes in the nearby market towns do that better than hotel rooms spread across a county.
