Several of Britain’s biggest airports are growing. The government chose Heathrow’s third-runway scheme in November 2025, Gatwick won consent in September 2025 to bring its northern runway into routine use, and Luton’s expansion, with a second terminal, was approved in April 2025. Manchester has finished expanding Terminal 2 and is merging Terminals 1 and 3, Stansted has permission to extend its terminal, Edinburgh has announced a five-year expansion, and Doncaster Sheffield is being brought back into use.
Airport work runs in stages: planning and design, enabling works and utility diversions, then terminals, piers, stands, taxiways and car parks, followed by fit-out, baggage and IT systems, and testing before anything opens. Most of it happens while the airport stays open, so airside work is often done at night. Big programmes run for years: Heathrow’s third runway isn’t expected to be in use until well into the 2030s.
On an airport project you’ll find civil and building contractors, steel erectors, mechanical and electrical fitters, baggage system and IT engineers, airfield lighting and surfacing crews and project managers, working alongside the airport’s own staff on shifts that start before dawn and finish late. Teams change as each package starts and ends.
Rooms near big airports are full of travellers and priced for a night or two, not a month. Staff and crews on early and late shifts need a quiet place to sleep at odd hours, a kitchen, and a short, reliable trip to work. A whole home nearby, shared by the team, is often simpler than a block of hotel rooms.
