Homes for programmes that run for months
HS2 is being built between London and Birmingham, with new stations at Euston, Old Oak Common, Interchange near Solihull and Curzon Street, tunnels under the Chilterns and Warwickshire, and depots at Washwood Heath and Calvert. HS2 now says passenger services won’t start before 2036, so work will run for years yet. Around it, the TransPennine Route Upgrade is electrifying the line from Manchester to York via Huddersfield and Leeds, East West Rail is linking Oxford, Milton Keynes, Bedford and Cambridge, and Northern Powerhouse Rail is in planning.
Big rail jobs run in stages: surveys and enabling works, then heavy civils such as earthworks, viaducts, tunnels and stations, then railway systems like track, overhead line, signalling and power, and finally testing and commissioning. Each stage can last years. HS2’s Chiltern tunnel has been bored and is being handed over for fit-out, while TransPennine sections are planned into the 2030s. Once a line opens, maintenance and renewal teams keep working on it.
On site you’ll find civil engineers, tunnelling crews, steel fixers and concrete gangs, plant operators, track and overhead line teams, signalling and telecoms engineers, and testers. A lot of rail work happens in possessions, the nights, weekends and longer blockades when the line is closed, so crews work shifts and travel in for blocks of days. Teams grow and shrink as each stage starts and finishes.
Rail sites stretch for miles, often away from town centres, and big blockades fill local hotels fast. Crews on long programmes need more than a room: a kitchen, somewhere to dry kit, a quiet place to sleep after a night shift and parking near the worksite. A whole home for the team, close to the line, is often simpler than a row of hotel rooms.
