There’s a lot of defence work going on, at bases and factories alike. Rolls-Royce has started a major expansion of its Raynesway site in Derby, where it makes the reactor plants for Royal Navy submarines. Sheffield Forgemasters, owned by the Ministry of Defence since 2021, is installing a new 13,000-tonne forging press. BAE Systems is raising artillery shell output with a new filling facility at Glascoed. At RAF Brize Norton a £180 million airfield overhaul is under way, and new barracks rooms are being built at Catterick Garrison, the largest British Army garrison in the world.
The work comes in waves. New buildings, hangars and airfield surfaces take months or years to design and build, often while the base keeps running, so crews work around flying and live operations. At Coningsby, for example, quick reaction alert has to keep working throughout the airfield upgrade. Then come fit-out, systems and commissioning, followed by years of maintenance, upgrades and facilities management. At factories like Raynesway, Glascoed and Forgemasters, the building crews are followed by engineers who install and commission the new plant.
On site you’ll find groundworkers, steel erectors, surfacing crews, electricians, mechanical and electrical engineers, commissioning engineers and project managers, plus specialists from the main contractors and their supply chains. Many teams work weekday shifts and go home at weekends, and numbers rise and fall with each phase.
Many bases are in quiet countryside a long way from big cities, like Lossiemouth on the Moray coast, Marham in Norfolk or Catterick in North Yorkshire. Jobs run for months, so a crew needs more than a hotel room: a bed each, a kitchen, space to unwind and parking near the door. Homes on Nezt are private homes from local hosts, off the base, and your company handles any site clearance.
